Schedule Information
Location: Kerr Building
Drop-off: Tuesday, September 8 5:30-8:00pm or Wednesday, September 9 - 10:00am-6:30pm
Judging: Thursday, September 10 (Closed to the public)
Pick-up: Monday, September 21 - 10:00am-4:30pm

Best of Show Caricature and Realistic- Rosettes

Rules
1. All entries must be carved from wood by the entrant from start to finish. (No golf balls, bowling balls, gourds, leather, antlers, animal bones, etc.). Leaves, vines, flowers must be hand formed but glass eyes, driftwood may be used. Cast or molded feet and class projects may be entered in Novice and Intermediate but NOT in Open. Judges will take into consideration, originality, workmanship, and finish to determine the ranking for each lot or category.
2. The term “carving” is a general heading and embraces sculpture and whittling as specified.
3. Due to limited space, items should be no taller than 30”, no wider than 20”, and no deeper than 20” exception is walking sticks and canes (Larger items may be entered by permission of the Director, as space provides.)
4. Only THREE (3) entries per lot allowed per exhibitor.
5. Exhibitor may enter only one class: Open, Intermediate, Novice
6. No Intarsia pieces may be entered into this Dept.
7. All entries must have been made within the last 2 years.
  • Open Class - Anyone who competes above the Intermediate level. Anyone who has won Best of Show in Intermediate in the past 10 years. Anyone who teaches woodcarving above the beginner level or anyone wishing to compete at this level. Anyone that has won Best of Intermediate. All entries must be original works of the entrant, no class projects or copies of class projects.
  • Intermediate Class - Anyone competing above the Novice level and those that have previously won Best of Novice at the Tennessee Valley Fair.
  • Novice Class - Carvers that carve at the novice level and have not won Best of Show at the Tennessee Valley Fair. If a piece wins Best of Show or 1st place, that piece cannot be re-entered.
Judging Guidelines - each of the following will be considered equally:
1 - Shape and Form
2 - Worthiness and/or Decorative Value
3 - Construction and Workmanship
4 - Finishing

Class 1 - Open Woodcarving and Wood Sculpture (Tennessee State Fair Eligible!)
Lot
01 - Open - Any carved item using Cottonwood Bark
02 - Open - Relief Carving, painted, natural finish or stained - Carving must be relieved from the wood, not attached to another piece.
03 - Open - Chip Carving - Design can be geometric, freeform and lettering
04 - Open - Christmas - Realistic or caricature. Anything carved out of wood with a Christmas theme (ornaments, Santa, snowmen, angels, elves, Nativity Scene, etc)
05 - Open - Fantasy Figures (gnomes, elves, wizards, Super Heroes, magic wands, etc.)
06 - Open - Animal Figures, realistic (properly proportioned)
07 - Open - Birds - realistic (any, displayed in a natural way)
08 - Open - Aquatic, realistic (any, displayed in a natural way)
09 - Open - Caricatures of animals, birds, aquatic figures
10 - Open - Abstract, Ornamental, Stylistic
11 - Open - Human Figure, realistic, including human bust
12 - Open - Human Figure, caricature
13 - Open - Group Carving, realistic, caricature, human or animal, mounted on one base designed to be a scene, display or deplete a story or idea)
14 - Open - Walking Sticks (canes, staffs) minimum 36"
15 - Open - Wood Spirits and Found Wood carvings
16 - Open - Utility Items, carved (can be turned or made out of wood but must have some carving details) - spoons, cups, trays, letter openers, signs, plates, bowls, boxes, jewelry, scarf pins, barrettes, fishing lures, etc)
17 - Open - Flowers, realistic or caricature
18 - Open - Bottle stoppers
19 - Open - Religious items
20 - Open - Patriotic theme
21 - Open - Fair theme
22 - Open - Any other carving not listed
